Fewer than 1000 payphones earmarked for the chop
21 Feb 2006

Telstra has denied that 5000 public phones will go, saying that only 950 have been earmarked for removal, with a further 4050 under review. A Telstra said, "We are not closing 5000 payphones," she said. "The number is 950 and, of those 950, anyone who believes that particular phone should not be closed down has 90 days to lodge an objection." Telstra said a sticker identifying a payphone's possible scrapping meant people who used the phone knew of its intended fate and had plenty of time to object.
