Sown to the centimetre 9 Aug 2006
Farmers use the global positioning system to plough, seed and harvest their crops with breathtaking accuracy. Ground-based receivers use the data from the satellites and transfer the information to the farmer's tractor or harvester. Basic GPS accuracy is four metres, using a hand-held apparatus for "crop scouting" or just "looking around". Real time kinematic allows the farmer to perform tasks to an accuracy of just two centimetres.
