Telcos chase bush broadband honeypot 20 Dec 2006
Jockeying is underway for a federal government subsidy of $600 million to help fund investment in broadband in the bush. Optus and Elders say they would ensure 700,000 premises would receive broadband for the first time. The companies plan to build a fixed wireless broadband access network which would allow 2.7 million homes and businesses to access the service. Telstra has already put forward a proposal that would make broadband available to about 250,000 mainly regional households that do not have the service. Austar, Unwired Group and Soul said on Monday they had also submitted a joint bid for Broadband Connect funding.
