Rural broadband plans progressing
26 Mar 2007

An announcement is expected soon to unveil the winner of a government tender for provision of broadband services to rural and regional areas. Helen Coonan, the federal Communications Minister, said yesterday that the proposal put forward by Labor was "what people are going to do anyway". Senator Coonan said that the rollout of a fast fibre network between capital cities could be complete within three years and then expanded to a much broader regional footprint. Labor disputed this with their communications spokesperson, Stephen Conroy, saying that by the Government's and Telstra's own admissions capital city network could not be up and running in three years.
