Food or fuel, not both 4 Jun 2007
Not enough crops are produced to supply our needs for both food and bio-fuel, according to the latest issue of the Australian Farm Institute's Farm Policy Journal. The report says that investment needs to be made into technology that will allow biofuel to be made from cellulose in the leaves and stalks of crops. Mick Keogh, executive director of the institute, said that if all Australia's wheat and sugar production was turned into ethanol it would only generate 20 per cent of the fuel used currently for transport and that the belief that biofuel reduced greenhouse gas emissions was questionable.
