Broadband a priority for bush
26 Jun 2007

Research by Central Queensland University has found that businesses in rural Queensland would pay up to $115 per month for a broadband service at 1.5 Mbps and another $86 per month on top of that for speeds of 28 Mbps. The $1.9 billion plan by the federal government to fix rural broadband services cannot come fast enough for non-metropolitan businesses. Grain Farmer Peter Treloar in South Australia’s Eyre Peninsula said that he switched from a Telstra dial-up connection to a wireless broadband service but it is not much faster. As well as improving access for people working on the land, broadband is expected to assist rural towns, increasing employment opportunities.
