Rural skills crisis
2 Jul 2007

The skills shortage in the Australian economy generally is hitting the agricultural sector with enrolments in agriculture courses down 35 per cent over the last five years. Skilled scientists are also thin on the ground with a shortfall of 35 per cent is being forecast over the next five to ten years. The decline may be due to incorrect perceptions that agriculture has limited career prospects and involves hard labour, while the reality is that it has a reliance on high technology.
