GM future for the West
3 Jul 2007

The Northern Australian Land and Water taskforce, which is being chaired by senator Bill Heffernan, has said that Western Australia needs to reconsider its ban on GM crops as a priority. Senator Heffernan said "There is an obvious need, if Australia is to develop as an agricultural nation, to come to terms with GM cropping. That's a blindingly obvious statement to make. We'll be setting out a sound scientific basis to present the logic that GM crops have a vital role to play in the north." WA Agriculture Minister said that the state government had made a commitment to maintain the moratorium on GM crops until the next election but that this did not preclude undertaking research and development. GM cotton is already permitted in the Ord but no commercial applications have been received yet.
