NLIS slows sales
4 Jul 2007

Mutton sales were down dramatically last week following the implementation of a 'no tag, no bid' policy by some of the major Australian meat processors. Sale volumes were down 80 per cent in Bendigo and 50 per cent in Dubbo as producers feared lower prices if their sheep did not have the National Livestock Identification System tag. A previous deadline of 1 July 2009 for implementation of the scheme was brought forward to 1 July this year. Older sheep are not legally required to be tagged but abattoirs who demand the tags may not bid.
