GM crop survey flawed 2 Aug 2007
A survey conducted by Biotechnology Australia about public attitudes toward GM crops has been accused of "push polling" by GM opponents. According to organic farmers and environmental activists the results of the poll have been used by the federal government to pressure states to review their bans on GM crops. Organic farmer, Sam Statham, who participated in workshops to design the survey, said that they were assured that the results would not be used to support a political push to have the bans lifted. Mr Statham said that the questions mostly asked people if they would support GM if it solved world problems. "Obviously people are going to say 'Yes, I'll support it if it solves world problems," he said. A press release from Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane said that public support for GM crops had risen dramatically over the past two years to 73 per cent.
