Government gets tough over mobile coverage
7 Aug 2007

The federal government is forcing Telstra to ensure that coverage provided by its new 3G network is at least as good as provided by the old CDMA network before it can be switched off. The government will commence an audit of the coverage in October and if it does not pass then severe penalties will be enforced. Rural groups have expressed concerns that coverage provided by the new network is not extensive enough and that too few handsets are available that can take advantage of faster broadband speeds and other features. Telstra said that it was confident that Next G network coverage would match CDMA coverage by mid-October.
