Biofuels viable only with technology improvement
15 Aug 2007

The cost of food could increase by as much as 40 per cent by 2020 if advances in agricultural technology do not keep up with increased demand as the world switches to biofuels. The US is aiming to increase its use of biofuels for transport from around 4 per cent now to 30 per cent by 2030. Already the use of corn crops for ethanol production in the US has contributed to higher food prices, along with other factors such as the Australian drought. Currently some methods of production use more fuel than they produce but second generation biofuels use all plant material and are much more efficient.
