Water use can be cut through research 6 Sep 2007
Research funded by Australia through aid programs is helping to save 1000 billion litres of water each year overseas, and has the potential to save Australian farmers 2000 billion litres per year. Already the research has meant rice growers in the Murrumbidgee and Coleambally Irrigation Areas use less water, irrigation efficiency in the Ord has been improved and saline drainage water in the Murray Darling Basin is being re-used. CSIRO and members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences working on one project to reduce the amount of water required for rice crops have been able to improve water management, reduce losses and make better use of groundwater to reduce salinity build-up.
