Clever planning doubles property values
8 Oct 2007

Property values in the Top End could double following a research project that has doubled utilisation of the land. Two stations have participated in the project which used initiatives such as water management, investment in animal behaviour practices and expenditure on infrastructure to improve the yield of the properties. A report on the project said that increasing the stocking rates on properties usually caused a decline in nutritional levels, but that by using an alternate water management system they had cut the cost of nutrition from $32 per head each year to $12. Time invested in training cattle to modify their behaviour and using additional fencing had reduced mustering costs from $10 per head to as little as $2.25 per head. GPS tracking found that cattle did not use the land evenly so smaller paddocks were created which has meant that more cattle can be kept on the same total land area.
