Care needed with 2,4-D 25 Oct 2007
The weedkiller 2,4-D is effective for use around cereals, grain crops and sugarcane, but is deadly for tomatoes, grapes, cotton and native plants. Use of the chemical in Australia has been restricted to spraying between May 1 and August 31 each year but the Australian Pesticide and Veterinary Medicines Authority has said that it will consider permits outside these dates for specific circumstances. Co-operative Bulk Handling has obtained a permit that allows its members to use the chemical between October and April. The spray can travel far in hot, dry conditions and effect plants for two days after use. Last year a cotton crop worth millions of dollars was lost after being affected by the spray which caused the buds to stop developing and never open.
