Wi-max coverage a fantasy
1 Nov 2007

The Institute of Public Affairs has said that the wireless broadband network proposed by the Howard government will only be able to reach a fraction of the people claimed. Maps issued by the government show that each base station in the wi-max network would reach 20 kilometres but the IPA says that 10 kilometres is a more realistic estimate. Communications Minister Helen Coonan, who has been travelling to regional electorates promoting the benefits of her plan, highlighted the report's criticism of the Labor party's proposal to use $4.7 billion of taxpayer's funds to build a fibre network. The government's wi-max wireless network would receive $958 million in public funding with the remaining $917 million to come from the Opel consortium formed by Optus and Elders.
