Satellites target illegal land clearing
19 Nov 2007

Satellite imaging technology is being used to watch for illegal land clearing. Images of one property in central NSW show that 18 hectares of bush present in February 2005 was gone in August 2006, allegedly due to illegal clearing activity. Another pair of images show that there may have been 227 hectares cleared on another property in western NSW. These claims are currently being investigated and since the end of 2005 the Department of Environment and Climate Change has investigated 218 matters. New 'Spot 5' technology introduced this year will make getting away with unauthorised clearing even tougher as it can detect objects at plus or minus 2.5 metre accuracy compared with the old system which had 20 metre accuracy.
