GM approved by NSW and Victoria
28 Nov 2007

The NSW and Victorian governments yesterday decided to lift their moratoriums on growing genetically modified crops. The Victorian premier John Brumby said that allowing the use of GM crops would put local farmers on an equal footing with their competitors in Canada in the US and that the market would decide how quickly GM canola would be taken up and whether segregation from conventional crops was necessary. Other states have criticised the move saying that it could lead to contamination of non-GM crops and put large scale export markets at risk.
