Greens want GM safeguards
5 Dec 2007

NSW Greens are pushing for amendments to the state government bill that will allow farmers to grow two types of genetically modified herbicide resistant canola from next year. The Greens want the legislation to state that any further requests to approve new GM crops will have to go through a three month public consultation and peer review process instead of the planned "expert panel" with no public input. MP Ian Cohen said that there should also be protection for the rights of farmers who choose not to grow GM crops. "The biotech companies pushing this technology onto the community should be legally responsible for losses that GM-free farms suffer as a result of contamination," he said.
