Federal government sees answers in GM 30 Jan 2008
The federal government will support efforts to create genetically modified crops that are drought and pest resistant according to Agriculture Minister Tony Burke. Mr Burke said that while it was up to each state whether or not to allow the use of GM crops he believes that they have an important role to play in preparing agriculture for climate change. "Some of the significant expenses that Australian agriculture faces is dealing with the pests and diseases that you start to encounter by being in a warm climate. That's something that...I don't think has been front of mind," he said.
