Telstra mobiles not up to scratch 15 Feb 2008
Consumers will not be told which of Telstra's mobile phones don't have sufficient signal strength to work properly on the NextG network. While admitting that at least six handsets sold by Telstra provide less coverage than others, the Australian Communications Authority, Telstra, and the Communications Minister all agree that they will not be identified. An ACMA report listed at least six phones which it said "were likely to provide less coverage" than the least capable phones on the CDMA network, however the details were blacked out when the report was issued to the public. Senator Conroy said that he had been given the information about the phones by Telstra on a confidential basis and that, without Telstra's approval, he could not release it. Telstra says that none of the handsets identified are those that carry the "blue tick" applied to phones recommended for rural and regional areas.
