WA GM trial halted
18 Mar 2008

WA farmers can only watch trials of GM canola crops in NSW and Victoria as their first broadacre trial has been abandoned. The trial was to have been conducted by the South-East Premium Wheat Growers Association which planned to grow 2.5 heactares of Roundup Ready canola at Esperance. The association's president, Chris Reichstein said that they had lost hope that the government would lift its ban on GM crops following comments by Premier Alan Carpenter that there was "no hope" of the happening. Mr Reichstein said that it was a political reality that there was no possibility of commercialisation of GM canola cropping in the foreseeable future but, if the trials perform well in other states, pressure will be applied to the government to change its position.
