Our premium wines don't measure up 7 Aug 2003
Petaluma boss Brian Croser, one of South Australia's leading winemakers, believes Australia's reputation as a respected wine producer is at risk. The reason is that the nation's top wines are simply not good enough, he says.
Australia has become known internationally for its mass-market wines and has done a very good job at producing commodity wine, Mr Croser said, but we can't compare with the best of the best that France, California and Germany produces. A global reputation depends on what's done at the top as well.
Mr Croser cited a lack of economic incentive as one of the main reasons Australia is not improving wine quality and marketing at the top end. Only small quantities of ultra-premiums are made and most are sold domestically. Thus returns are limited and the necessary investment in vineyard management required to make the best wines is not encouraged, he said.
