SA shiraz takes top wine award 8 Aug 2003
The annual Jimmy Watson Memorial Trophy for the best one-year-old red wine in Australia has been awarded to Saltram Wine Estates from South Australia. The award was given to Saltram's Eighth Maker Shiraz 2002 from a record number of entries at the Royal Melbourne Wine Show. About $1 million in sales for the wine are expected to be generated by the award.
Other winners were Morris Wines of Rutherglen for its Tokay NV - Premier's Gold Trophy for best Victorian fortified wine; Craiglee's 1997 shiraz - best red wine; Hardy's 2001 Arras chardonnay pinot noir - best sparkling wine; and Tyrell's 1997 Belford semillon - best white wine.
Paringa Estate at Red Hill won two awards: the Victorian Wine Industry Association Trophy for most successful Victorian exhibitor and the Francois De Castella Trophy for most successful exhibitor.
There were 4,379 entries in the show, which was a record number since the show started in 1884.
