Don't force us out of business: Adelaide Hills farmers 29 Sep 2003
Adelaide Hills farmers have stepped up their campaign against new SA Government policies they say will strip them of future income and make them unviable. About 200 farmers and local residents will attend a meeting on October 2 at the One Tree Hill Institute Hall to protest against tighter development controls being considered as part of the Hills Face Zone review.
One Tree Hill Wine Region president Fay Hull claims the proposed changes indicate that the State Government intends to seize control over all Hills Face Zone land. Legislation will allow current usage but the Government wants to prevent any future farming development or growth, she said. Ms Hull said a new policy direction has been developed without input from farmers or an assessment of the likely socio-economic impact on people living in the hills north of Adelaide.
Ms Hull said wine, food, hospitality and tourism industries in the region will generate $500 million a year by 2015. She said if farm activities collapse, the unmanaged land will become "just another unsightly, weed-ridden bushfire hazard".
