Wine levy a worry
26 Nov 2003

Small wineries will suffer if the wine industry increases its R&D levy, according to Ken Helm of Helm Wines at Murrumbateman, near Canberra. The current R&D component of the wines grapes levy is $3 per tonne, but the Winemakers' Federation of Australia wants the legislation amended so it can increase the maximum allowable rate to $10 per tonne.

Mr Helm said these sorts of things make a very hard impact on smaller wineries, of which there are more than 1,000 in Australia. A Winemakers' Federation of Australia spokesman stated that a bottle of wine would only increase by about 0.2 cents.

Herald Sun, 26/11/03, page 29.
