Wine body folds
19 Feb 2004

The Winegrape Growers' Council, the peak organisation representing Australia's wine grape growers, has gone into voluntary administration. The group previously represented independent grape growers in the Murray Valley, the Riverland and the Riverina. It will now re-form as Wine Grapes Australia, with a broader membership from other wine-growing areas.

Victorian and Murray Valley Winegrape Growers' Council said the council had wanted to change its constitution and open the doors to other regions, but there was resistance from SA members. Other members felt there was no option but to wind up and start again.

Wine Grapes Australia is expected to be formed by the middle of this year, following further consultation with the industry.

Weekly Times, 18/2/04, page 70.
