Incitec Pivot stops sale of ammonium nitrate fertiliser 6 Apr 2004
Australia's biggest fertiliser manufacturer, Incitec Pivot, has taken ammonium nitrate fertiliser off the market, citing "concern for public safety if the material is used for terrorist or criminal acts". The Attorney-General welcomed the move but said the Government will still go ahead with plans to regulate its purchase, use and storage.
Ammonium nitrate fertiliser is used in horticulture, and grape and turf-growing. Farmers and industry groups said alternative fertilisers are either more expensive or less effective. National Farmers' Federation president Peter Corish labelled Incitec's move "premature". He said there are many other hazardous substances, readily available, that can be used by criminals for bomb-making.
