SA politicians join forces to cut wine tax
14 Apr 2004

SA Premier Mike Rann, Opposition leader Rob Kerin and National MP Karlene Maywald have sent an unprecedented joint letter to the Prime Minister pushing for cuts to taxes on wine. The letter states concerns about the growth of South Australia's regional wine industry, which is threatened by the dramatic decline in viability, particularly among small and medium wineries.

The letter calls for relief from the Wine Equalisation Tax in the coming federal Budget. The Winemakers' Federation has said the tax is the single largest component in the final sale price of wines, which incur 10 per cent GST and 29 per cent WET. The federation proposed an exemption from WET on the first 600,000 litres of domestic sales.

The politicians said the removal of the tax on small and medium wineries will restore margins and enable jobs growth to continue; this would lead to investment and tourism development in regional communities.
