Wine sales trickle off 4 Jun 2004
Sales of wine in Australia fell 4.9 per cent in April to 34.4 million litres, and were 5 per cent down on the same period last year. White wine sales decreased 3.3 per cent to 17.4 million litres, while red and rose sales fell to 11.7 million litres, down 6.1 per cent.
Wine exports also dropped - by 7.3 per cent to $207.2 million for April. Exports reached $1.9 billion for the first 10 months of the 2003-2004 financial year and are unlikely to surpass the record of $2.4 billion set in the 2002-2003 year.
The decline in wine exports was due to a 50 per cent fall in the total quantity shipped, and the average value of the exported wine was down almost 17 per cent. The UK, up to now Australia's biggest overseas market, fell to $63.6 million. The US accounted for $84.4 million in sales, overtaking the UK for the first time.
