Aust shiraz the centre of worldwide winemaking attention 29 Jul 2004
The Barossa Valley will hold a four-day gathering of shiraz experts at the end of this week. About 350 delegates, including 200 from around the world, will attend the International Shiraz Alliance event. Organiser Peter Fuller said the idea for the event in the Barossa region was conceived five years ago.
Mr Fuller said shiraz has taken over from cabernet as the major grape variety in the world and Australia has been credited with driving that - we make shiraz in a really palate-friendly way because of our warmer climate, he said.
Wine-making countries including France, the US, South Africa, Chile, Argentina and Spain will be represented at the event, as well as people from all Australian states and territories.
Discussions will be held on the impact nature has on shiraz grapes, wine-making and fermentation techniques, marketing and the future of the grape variety. The event will culminate in a shiraz exhibition tasting of more than 200 shiraz wines from around the world.
