Climate chips help vine-tune health 2 Aug 2004
A tiny sensor chip which can measure humidity, soil moisture, the amount of rainfall on leaves and wind speed could help winemakers identify which vines require irrigation and which are most susceptible to disease, such as the fungal rot disease of Botrytis. The sensors can also predict growing vines' water needs, thus reducing water consumption and helping to deal with rising salinity.
The mini weather stations have been trialled in Victoria's Yarra Valley and were developed by the CRC for Microbiology and Motorola Australia. They were unveiled at last week's Australian Wine Industry Technical Conference in Melbourne.
