Dump 'threat' to wine, food exports
25 Aug 2004

Food and wine exports from Victoria's Mildura region could be harmed if a proposed toxic dump site at Nowingi went head, says Mildura's mayor Peter Byrne. The planned site is 30 km north of Ouyen and Mr Byrne said local exporters are very concerned about their overseas markets. They are already receiving queries about the issue via phone, fax and e-mail.

The Mildura region has 35,000ha of irrigated horticultural land producing fresh produce and wine generating economic activity of around $2 billion a year; much of the produce is exported. Mr Byrne said rival wine producers such as France, South Africa and Chile would take advantage of the Nowingi dump to talk down the region.

The community is ready to blockade the site if a planning appeal fails. The Mildura mayor, farmers, the Victorian Opposition leader, leader of the Nationals and Independent member for Mildura all protested outside the Premier's office this week.
