EU throws down the chips over wine labels
12 Nov 2004

The European Union wants winemakers to finally agree to cease using both traditional expressions as well as geographical terms to describe Australian wine. The controversial phrases include terms such as vintage, tawny port and ruby. Geographical identifiers in dispute include port, moselle and Chablis. If Australia’s government and winemakers accept these limits, then the EU would allow more wine imports from Australia. At the moment, the EU won’t allow imports of wine made through cheap rather than traditional methods, such as the use of oak chips in stainless steel barrels to enable oak flavouring.
