Controversy bubbles along over place names 19 Nov 2004
The World Trade Organisation ruled in favour of Australian wine producers, who may soon win back the right to label sparkling wines as "champagne". But a container ship full of trade rows may be on the horizon over the use of names. A WTO disputes panel struck out European Union rules banning products from other countries using names designated as "geographical indicators". A draft WTO ruling would outlaw EU restrictions on the naming of foods and drink, such as champagne, burgundy, Parma ham and gorgonzola,. The panel said the EU rule discriminated against foreign products and could not be used to ban names in translation such as sherry, port or saffron. Further controversy remains over parmesan cheese, fetta cheese and even yoghurt, a name claimed by a region in Bulgaria.
