Grape growers whine about lower prices
10 Dec 2004

A record grape harvest has resulted in lower payments per tonne for growers in the Murray Valley. Murray Valley grape growers sold 357,000 tonnes of wine grapes in 2004, or 15,000 tonnes more than they sold to wineries in 2002. But winemakers paid about $200 million for the region’s crop, about the same as they paid for the 2002 crop. One exception was for the supply of chardonnay grapes, with a price rise to $881 a tone from $867 a tonne. Grape growers and winemakers are yet to resolve arguments about a fair formula for setting prices. Agreement has been reached between winemakers and growers on the need for a dispute resolution process. The Land, 10/12/04
