Yields ease as wine production revives
28 Jan 2005

Wine producers and exporters are earning less for their wine. The Australian Bureau of Statistics estimate that the average price per litre fell nine per cent from $4.67 in 2003 to $4.27 in 2004. In the domestic market, sales volumes increased by four per cent to 417 million litres, but the value of the wine sold fell by six per cent to $1.97 billion. In the export market, volumes reached a record 584 million litres, valued at $2.5 billion in 2004. About 37 per cent of wine produced in Australia is shipped overseas. The ABS data on the wine industry shows a turnaround from the drought conditions of 2003, with a record harvest, crush and wine production levels in 2003.
