Grape glut may leave growers in the red
23 Feb 2005

A glut of wine grapes is pushing prices to new lows. Prices have dropped as low as $200 a tonne for some red varieties, while spot prices for chardonnay in the Sunraysia area have dived from $900 a tonne last year to between $300 and $400 a tonne. Some growers delivering to their wineries do not even know what they are going to be paid. De Bortoli has warned the situation could get worse, as some grapes may not be picked at all as many wineries are already holding big stocks of wine from last vintage.
