White wine grape production surges
22 Jun 2005

The Winemakers Federation of Australia said an increase in white wine grape production in this year's harvest may help wind back the wine industry's glut of red wine grapes. The WFA said the white wine grape intake increased by 14 per cent for this year's harvest, to 855,000 tonnes. The red wine grape intake increased by less than one per cent to 1.07 million tonnes. The intake of chardonnay grapes increased by almost 34 per cent to 416,000 tonnes. It is now second only to shiraz in production. Cabernet sauvignon dropped by five per cent to just under 304,000 tonnes.
