Water cuts eat into premium wines 18 Feb 2008
Some of Australia's premium wines are expected to be in limited supply next year as growers in the McLaren Vale region near Adelaide struggle to cope with cuts to water allocations. The South Australian government has reduced the water available for irrigation of vines by 38 per cent for next year's vintage in an effort to cut consumption. McLaren Vales grapes are used to produce premium wines such as Penfolds Grange but growers face the tough decision this year whether to let 38 per cent of their vineyard die off to produce fruit from the rest of their vines, or giving all their vines just enough water to stay alive.
