Chardonnay no longer flavour of the month
23 May 2008

Growers in South Australia's Riverland district have been told to dump their chardonnay grapes. Consumer preferences are moving away from the full-bodied chardonnay wines toward the lighter flavours of sauvignon blanc and exports are being held back by the strength of the Australian dollar. Fosters has told growers that the maximum it will pay for "D-grade" chardonnay grapes used for table wines is $300 per tonne which would not be sufficient to cover production costs. Australian Wine and Brandy Corporation's Paul Henry said the market seems to have developed a preference for wines that are lighter, brighter and fresher.
