Consumers urged to be patient as farmers recover 18 Feb 2009
Victorian farmers affected by bushfires will not be able to produce fruit and vegetables to the same quality *or* quantity for many months to come. Most wine growers will not produce an 09 vintage and in many cases the 2010 vintage will also not be a success.
Federal Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Minister Tony Burke said, "If people were ever going to be fussy about their fruit and vegies, please don''t do it over the next few months. (This) allows the retailers to continue to buy the produce (from) farmers who are facing extraordinary difficulties to be able to do the best with the produce that they have."
Please think about us in the months to come says Barbara Snelling from Outpost Retreat, a restaurant at Noojee. "The fire season will be over soon and we''ll need Melbournians to come back and support the businesses in the fire-affected regions. We employ people and we buy from farmers."
