Less grapes but prices still depressing 1 Apr 2009
The 2009 grape harvest is likely to fall 13 per cent in 2009 to 1.6 million tonnes but prices are still expected to fall because of oversupply. ABARE said water shortages in wine regions, a heatwave in January and fire damage in Victoria have caused the reduction in output. Grape production 2010 is expected to return to its historical level around 1.8 million tonnes if those factors improved. Shiraz, chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon accounted for 60 per cent of all grapes produced in 2009 and are expected to continue to dominate production in future years.
