States compromise over interstate water trading 24 May 2006
Interstate water trade may start later this year after New South Wales compromised on its internal exchange rate for converting "general security" water when an interstate buyer wants to turn it into "high security". NSW Murray River irrigators will be able to convert two megalitres of their general-security water into 1.2 megalitres of high-security water for sale to Victorian irrigators. Victoria also compromised on the deal by agreeing that water permanently traded from NSW will be "tagged" to ensure that Victorians receive it each season, based on NSW allocations.
