McLaren Vale growers fear for their future
5 Feb 2008

McLaren Vale winemakers have called on the state government to reverse a water policy which they say could cost the industry $60 million over the next five years. Restrictions on the use of mains water that have been imposed from 1 February have been called unnecessary by the McLaren Vale Grower's Council and McLaren Vale Grape Wine and Tourism. In a letter the groups said that family-owned vineyards of less than 16ha that make wines such as Penfolds Grange, Hardy's Eileen Hardy and D'Arenberg's Dead Arm would be lost. The groups have pointed out that growers in the area use a different irrigation model than other areas and the region is aiming to be drought-proof by 2012. SA Water said that there is less water available to sell to growers because of the drought.
