Wake-up call on Murray-Darling water 8 Feb 2008
Climate change models are predicting that the Murray-Darling Basin may have to get used to having 30 to 50 per cent less water. Australia's chief scientist Jim Peacock said that, while this forecast was at the drier end of projections made by the International Panel on Climate Change, this was the most likely scenario. "This is very serious for us. As well as the global response to climate change, we need to be making other changes in our behaviour that can have an effect in a relatively short time frame," he said. While there are levels of uncertainty about climate models, Mr Peacock said that this should not be used as an excuse for inaction.
