Queensland apples have rosy blush 12 Feb 2008
Conditions have been ideal for growing apples in Queensland's Granite Belt. Growers report that the quality of royal gala, jonathons, granny smith, pink lady and sundowners is exceptionally high as the area had the right amount of rain at the right time. The cooler temperatures and moist easterly winds have helped the fruit to be more colourful and boosted yields. Almost all of the apples produced in Queensland are from the Granite Belt with a total value of $40 million from 1 million trees grown by 55 orchardists. Royal galas are the first picked and are fetching growers as much as $3 per kilogram and retail for as little as $4.
