Wheat crop could double this year 18 Feb 2008
Summer rains could mean that the next wheat crop is double the size of the last harvest, but more rains will be needed during winter, after the crop has been planted. Managing director at Profarmer, Richard Koch, has said that the next wheat crop should be around 25 million tonnes, comparable with the 2005-06 crop, but if the conditions are right it could even reach 30 million tonnes. "We're in a much stronger position – particularly through Queensland and most of NSW – than we were last year. But Western Australia is still a concern and South Australia and parts of western Victoria are still looking for more subsoil moisture to provide confidence for the year ahead," he said.
