Floods cause food shortage in Queensland 26 Feb 2008
Producers are warning of a spike in meat prices with flooding across the north of the country causing the loss of thousands of cattle from drowning and disease. Queensland's primary industries minister, Tim Mulherin, said that there is a shortage of cattle at meatworks right across the state. "Saleyards are operating but producers are struggling to get cattle out at the moment because of the wet," he said. Vegetable prices will also be affected as growers are unable to plant seedlings in their water-logged paddocks.
