Extra water to save ibis chicks
26 Mar 2008

The Murray-Darling Basin Commission has bought 11,000 litres of water to prevent ibis parents from abandoning their checks in their biggest breeding event since 2000. An estimated 30,000 breeding pairs have landed at the Narren Lakes breeding colony since mid-January due to heavy rain. However the water level has been dropping over recent weeks and it was feared that the parents would leave the area over the next week unless there were further inflows. The commission said that it had moved quickly to purchase the water from a seller in Queensland for $180 per megalitre and it has been flowing into the system since Easter Sunday.
